Zaatar Pita Chips (Printable Version)

Crispy baked pita triangles coated in aromatic za'atar spice, ideal for snacking or pairing with dips.

# What You Need:

→ Pita Chips

01 - 4 whole wheat pita breads

→ Za'atar Topping

02 - 3 tablespoons olive oil
03 - 2 tablespoons za'atar spice blend
04 - 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

# How To Make It:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
02 - Cut each pita bread into 8 triangles. For thicker pitas, carefully separate into single layers to achieve maximum crispness.
03 - In a small mixing bowl, combine the olive oil, za'atar spice blend, and sea salt. Stir until well blended.
04 - Using a pastry brush, lightly coat one side of each pita triangle with the za'atar oil mixture.
05 - Place the coated pita triangles in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they do not overlap.
06 - Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, flipping the chips halfway through, until golden brown and crispy throughout.
07 - Remove from the oven and allow the chips to cool on the baking sheet before serving. They will continue to crisp as they cool.

# Helpful Hints:

01 -
  • These chips go from pantry staple to party worthy in under twenty five minutes flat.
  • The za'atar coating creates a flavor that is somehow both earthy and bright, nothing like store bought chips.
  • You probably already have everything you need sitting in your kitchen right now.
02 -
  • Watch the chips closely after the ten minute mark because they cross from golden to burnt with alarming speed.
  • Splitting thick pita into single layers is the single biggest secret to getting that perfect snap instead of a chewy texture.
03 -
  • If your pitas are slightly stale, a light mist of water before brushing with oil revives them beautifully.
  • Double the batch because the amount of effort is exactly the same but the chips vanish twice as fast as you expect.
