Tuna Melt Grilled Sandwich (Printable Version)

Crispy grilled sandwich with creamy tuna salad and melted cheese

# What You Need:

→ Tuna Salad

01 - 1 (5 oz) can tuna in water, drained
02 - 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
03 - 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
04 - 1 small celery stalk, finely diced
05 - 1 tablespoon red onion, finely diced
06 - Salt and black pepper to taste

→ Sandwich Assembly

07 - 4 slices sandwich bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
08 - 1 tablespoon butter, softened
09 - 4 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese
10 - 2 slices tomato (optional)

# How To Make It:

01 - Combine drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, diced celery, and red onion in a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly until well incorporated. Season with salt and fresh black pepper to taste.
02 - Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. This buttered exterior will create the golden grilled crust.
03 - On the unbuttered side of two bread slices, spread half of the tuna salad mixture evenly. Add tomato slices if desired, then top each with 2 cheese slices. Cover with remaining bread slices, buttered side facing outward.
04 - Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula. Cook until bread turns golden brown and cheese is completely melted.
05 - Remove from heat, slice each sandwich diagonally in half, and serve immediately while hot and crispy.

# Helpful Hints:

01 -
  • The contrast between warm melted cheese and cool crisp tuna salad hits every comfort button
  • Ready in under 20 minutes but tastes like something from a diner counter
02 -
  • Medium heat is crucial because high heat burns the bread before the cheese melts through
  • Letting the assembled sandwiches sit for a minute before cooking helps the cheese melt faster
03 -
  • Butter the corners of the bread first where they tend to dry out
  • Cheese that goes all the way to the edge prevents the bread from burning
